Avon Publications

Avon Books was a major competitor to the more literary Pocket Book Company in the beginning of the paperback publishing industry. Avon Impulse

Avon was founded in 1941 as a publisher of paperback books and comics. The company later specialized in romance novels. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company. Meyers recruited sisters and brothers to work for the company. He wanted to create a different product to Pocket Books. They created this by printing low-cost paperbacks with an appeal to the masses, with stunning cover designs.

Avon reached its peak as a romance publisher novels in the 1970s. They released Kathleen Woodiwiss's sexy novel, The Flame and the Flower which stayed for 33 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Rosemary Rogers' sexy novels, Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies, were also published. This was the first time that a single title was a top seller in this genre.

Hearst Corporation purchased the company in 1959. Hearst concentrated on the romance offerings of the company, which led it to become one of the top publishers in this genre. The company continued to release inexpensive paperbacks on popular themes like westerns and whodunits. However, the emphasis on romance boosted their profits.

Avon still publishes romance novels. Avon Impulse is a digital imprint that publishes both paperbacks and ebooks. The imprint accepts submissions from amateur writers who aren't represented by an agent. It also allows authors to test their limits without having to worry about the reaction of the publishing industry.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads, and 50 percent royalty on every subsequent sale. The publisher edits the book and designs a sexy front cover. The book is available in ePub and Kindle formats, as well.
